Charlie Chaplin, as Weakchin, plucks some fir to fill his pipe. Chaplin later referred to this gag as the inspiration for the film, although the film also parodies D. W. Griffith's 'Man's Genesis'

Chaplin is awoken from his prehistoric dream by a policeman's truncheon. The policeman is thought to be played by Sydney Chaplin which suggests that contrary to popular belief, he started work at the Keystone company just prior to Charlie's departure
